City of Wyoming Breaks Ground on Godwin Mercado

A Vibrant New Hub for Community, Culture, and Commerce
The City of Wyoming held a groundbreaking ceremony today on the City’s new marketplace, Godwin Mercado, located at 301 36th Street.
The $6.2 million facility will operate year-round and support local vendors, seasonal farm and food markets and community events. The facility will be built on a 4.96-acre lot just west of the corner of 36th Street and Buchanan Avenue.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this significant milestone in our City’s comprehensive master plan, Wyoming [re]Imagined, which emphasized investments in placemaking and community engagement,” said City Manager John Shay. “This transformative project supports our City’s desire for a space that fosters community connections, revitalizes the 36th Street Corridor and supports local businesses.”
Godwin Mercado will be managed and programmed by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department which is responsible for 21 parks, 25 facilities available for event rentals and community programs for all ages.
“Godwin Mercado will be such a vibrant asset to our residents and community members,” said Parks and recreation Director Krashawn Martin. “The flexibility of this space promotes a variety of program offerings from fresh farm and artisan markets to event space for weddings and corporate events. The space is designed to promote year-round holistic health and wellness and celebrate community.”
Godwin Mercado is being funded from various sources including the sale of the former Site 36 property, grants from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Consumers Energy Foundation and Franklin Partners.
The City is also constructing a pedestrian trail along Buchanan Avenue that will connect area businesses and Godwin Heights High School to the Godwin Mercado.
The City expects construction to be complete in August 2025 with a full market opening in Spring 2026.
